Cats! – who knew?!
Okay, so I was feeling nice after WordPress contacted me to say that they were posting my site on their main page for a while. They had liked my sex and fruit flies piece, and within a week, my subscribers had sky-rocketed – doubled, in fact – all the way up to 500. I was getting 25 emails a day from new readers. My head was heady with success!
But then I was on the Toronto ferry going out to Centre Island (we were visiting in-laws while on vacation) when we met a woman with a very impressive camera and enormous lens who was on her way out to take photos of island cats for her blog site. I quickly discovered that this woman was hopelessly addicted to cats – there was nothing else she talked about – and had turned her addiction into a photography passion – and had launched her cat blog in January. Her blog currently had 37,000 subscribers and grew at the rate of about 200 new subscribers a day. (That was last August. Her site should be at about 90,000 subscribers now.)
She had already been approached by advertisers who will start paying her to advertise on her blog once she hits 50,000 subscribers.
So, today I present to you our Waldo, and our Miss Price.
As you can see, they are cats. There is absolutely nothing special about them. (Nor, is there anything especially special about 99% of the cats I see on the internet.) But that doesn’t matter. They are my cats and therefore they are special.
The internet infatuation with cats is astounding. There are a million cat blogs and a billion cat videos.
Perhaps in a crazy and indifferent world the picture of cats – like babies and puppies – soothes us with a soft syrup of nostalgia, or sense of wildness in an urban reality.
Soothing, soft, moody…whatever…everyone seems to love seeing cats – so here you are – more cats to add to the cat universe!
(P.S. It’s snowing again today in Halifax – so rather than deal with that, I give you cats!)
