why this ad fails…

Toyota thinks its pretty smart with this new ad that keeps popping up on my youtube channel today.

But I actually think that the ad is a failure.

It fails because it makes fun of peoples’ intelligence. It makes fun of our preconceived notions of how we think we know something.

The participants in the commercial are surprised to discover that they are driving Toyota Corollas – but they all just come off as being fools who aren’t in on the shell game.

Watch this commercial as if you are an anthropologist – and you have disovered this little piece of film and you try to derive this unknown culture’s social meaning.

This is what advertising does. It tries to sell you social meaning, social value. What does this commercial say about us and our relationship to cars, materialism, self-image, confidence, our social values, and our insecutities.

Write a 500 word essay on it by Friday, and have it on my desk by 4. 🙂
