Oklahoma tornadoes and pacts with the Devil…

May 21, 2013

Growing up on a farm I have always had a curiosity about tornadoes. So when I heard yesterday about the tragedy unfolding in Moore, Oklahoma, I started looking for video of the F-4 super tornado that levelled Moore.

What I stumbled upon was a right-wing news gathering website called Blaze News, which had raw video, but also streaming commentary about the storm.

I was amazed to find how many people actually blame Obama for the storm.

Many believe that he has made a pact with Satan – and that the storm was conveniently created to distract Americans from all the political scandal the Obama Administration is currently facing.

Others, apparently in other parts of America, do not even believe the storm happened, and that it is a conspiracy invented and put on by the media. I’m not sure how this plays over with the people of Moore, or the 50+ who are dead, but that is what they think.

Some used it as a reason for not having gun control – to protect oneself in a time of social chaos.

It’s hard to put a finger on what is happening to America these days. It seems to be unravelling – not only economically, but also psychically as well. There seems to be a counter-reformation happening where the Christian conservative-anti-science-xenophobic-hate mongering types are taking over and they are intent on bringing on the Last Days of the Apocalypse.

They are splitting America in two, and are content to talk of violent civil disobedience, a new civil war, and revolution.

When adults can actually believe in the 21st century that Obama has signed a pact with the devil to bring on super-storms (all the while ignoring climate change science that says these storms will become more frequent) I feel for what is left of the American ideal (whether or not it has ever really been realized).

America is entering that dark place – it is in that decade or so before the forces of evil are strong enough to fully attempt to overthrow the political system. History is full of examples of what happens to countries that lose the ability to be rational – and move as a mass stirred on by emotions and unfettered animal instincts.

Nazism, fascism, the Inquisition, witch hunts, lynching, crucifixions – are all examples of the worst in the tribe mentality.

America is going to need another Abe Lincoln. Assuming enough Americans still believe in someone like Abe. Which I think many do, but it is increasingly clear, that many more do not.

    Hi,

    The photos are great.

The tornado articele about pacts with the devil very distressing. All I could think of was OMG! Is there a way to ascertain how large this crazy minority is in actuality. They have a loud voice. How fringe are they?

    Cheers?

    Marcia

Well, pollsters are probably keeping a closer eye on these people than the mainstream is. But it’s safe to say, given the popularity of the Tea Party movement, FOX News, and the litaney of right-wing blogs out there that they are in greater numbers than most of us care to admit. And many of them are not as “fringe” as we want to believe. The New York Times recently got rid of its environmental reporters, few are complaining about Obama’s use of torture or drones or spying on the press. We have already shifted so far to the right vis-a-vis where were even two decades ago that few of us notice. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case about the separation of church and state, which they have traditionally refused to do – as it was accepted that America believed in that separation. The assumption is that they will overturn the idea of a separation of churh and state and America will then be allowed to officially call itself a Christian nation, and Chrisianity will have the full backing of government…
