civil disobedience – conservative style

May 1, 2013

I have always been the type of cynic who says that language creates reality. That the use of words build on their own logical conclusions and reality becomes the world we say it is.

So it is with consternation that I watch the mainstream right-wing in America increasingly using words like ‘revolution’, and ‘civil disobedience’, and ‘civil unrest’.

Anyone at the political centre, or left of centre, who doesn’t start to take this rhetoric seriously, does so at great cost.

The last American Civil War didn’t just pop up over night, to be quenched by a heroic Lincoln. For a decade people began openly declaring their wishes for war.

That is what we are seeing now in America. And I believe it is serious enough to consider  a betting game choosing the date (and show) when FOX News openly calls for violent civil disobedience.

The new world is just too much for conservatives to stomach – what with the gay marriage, and the Muslims, and all the “minorities”.

Most Republicans have now simply refused to cooperate at any level with the Democrats and their Black President. And its not just ideological issues – they refuse to participate on any issue. They simply want to bring Washington to its knees.

And if the polls are correct, the Republicans could lose significant political power in next year’s congressional elections because of it. That is why they are franticly trying to vote rig in a number of states.

America is a country in crisis – despite what the media tries to tell you about Iron Man 3. Poverty is deep-seated, public education is a mess, people are up to their eyeballs in debt – and American capital is draining out of the country like water through a sieve.

America is in that similar place where Rome was about 100 years before the fall. Only things move a lot faster now, so America is about 50 years from the fall. (Assuming you are an optimist and think they haven’t already fallen.)

Its going to be a pretty ugly sight to see.

And it will take large swaths of Canada with it. How could it not?

Well this is depressing…but sadly kinda true
Any thoughts on how we fix this downward spiral we seem to be in?

Any thoughts…well that’s the $64,000 question isn’t it? I have been pondering it ever since you asked. On a personal level it’s all about “think global, act local”, do not participate in a consumer-driven economy; read widely, live healthy. Beyond that it gets very murky. As a Historian, it is easy to see that there are large global forces at work that have a certain determinist bent – the movement of capital to Asia (and away from America); global warming and climate change; the obesity tsunami, aging demographics. What frustrates me the most perhaps is this long-standing Christian idea that we are always on the verge of the “end-times” and that for many, this is a good thing and should be spirited along. This idea, after a century of generally being dismissed, seems to be again raising its ugly head, with many Republicans saying things like what’s the point of dealing with climate change when the rapturous end times are imminent. I do not know why we have such a long-standing neurosis for such things, but many people – too many people – are caught up in this conviction (its a fundamental aspect of Western History). I grasp at the thought that every day more and more people are coming to the progressive notion that things need to change – but I am not sure if the wave can gain enough momentum fast enough to overcome the nihilists – corporate or religious – who are convinced that its time to end the game.

Convince as many people near you as possible to turn off their television and participate in applied critical thinking and their real lives. Tell them to get to know their neighbors. Remind them that patriots love their country always and their government only when it is deserved. Explain the when grand webs of lies are the norm, truth will sound like treason, even when it is not.
