Someone happened to be looking at some of my photography the other day and remarked that I have a thing for monumentalism in some of my pictures. I had thought it more about photographing the grotesque – the absurdity of human vanity – and on occassion my fascination with the banal, and the ugly.

Maybe they are just different takes of the many different aspects that there are to monumentalism. But I know I am fascinated with our undercurrent deep-seated desire for totalitarian-ism – which I feel all monumental man-made objects contain. It reflects the ego that has that transparent desire to dominate a space, to own the surroundings, to conquer nature.
