If a tree falls…who gives a damn…
Woke up to the sound of chain saws the last couple of days and watched as whoever bought the house next to our duplex took out every tree in their backyard. Every single one. Also ripped out the long hedge that acted as a property marker. Took out all the scrub trees as well.
The back yard was clear-cut.
Tragic – is the only word I can think to describe it. It makes me want to weep.
And when I called my councillor he said there is no by-law in Halifax to stop it from happening. In Toronto, it would have been nearly impossible to do such a thing to 8-10 healthy mature 60-80′ trees.
In Halifax, only trees on public property are protected from such massacres.
Now, our neighbouring backyard, usually full of crows and blue jays and blackbirds and woodpeckers and numerous other birds is eerily silent. My neighbours birdfeeder unattended.
And for what? More parking spaces that can be rented out by the month.
Yes, you can cut down your trees and turn your backyard into a parking lot in Halifax. It happened to my house (before we came here). It happened two houses over. The middle property had been the last refuge for our micro-wildlife.
Soon, it will be a completely wide-open giant parking lot behind our houses on South Park Street.
It’s just what the world needs. More parking spaces. And less trees.
