Stephen Harper and abortion

September 19, 2012

So, Stephen Harper, and the conservative cronies he works for, is trying to sneak a vote into the House of Commons which will bring back what the politicians, and the media of this country colloquially call the “abortion-issue”.

Motion M-312, as it is called, has been buried in The Conservatives new omnibus bill. It will allow for an open vote in the House of Commons the could begin a process of criminalizing abortion.

For those of you who don’t know what an “omnibus” bill is – it is a wonderfully anti-democratic mechanism government can use to roll up a large amount of issues into one massive tome, and pass it through the House of Commons voting procedures with little or no opposition.

That way you don’t actually have to sit down and discuss any one issue in real depth – like fisheries, or mining, or anything else for that matter. There is no space for expert witnesses, committees, media commentary, public input.

You know; all those things that make democracy so messy. Hey, it’s all about making government efficient.

And what I don’t understand is how a conservative thinks it’s an invasion of privacy to give the police the power to register our guns, but it’s not an invasion of privacy for the government to have the right to tell a woman what she is going to do with her own body.

That’s the crux of my biggest frustration with conservatives. They say they are in favour of small government, but at the same time they want the government to have the power to tell us what to do and how to live.

They want prayer put back in public school. They want big military budgets. They want the minimum wage to be kept as low as possible.

But when you tell them that other countries have public healthcare, better schools, and healthier people, they accuse you of being a socialist. Or a communist.

Like somehow you are the monster.

It’s really very bizarre.
