Ravi Shankar…for an excellently mellow Sunday afternoon

June 12, 2011

We’re going to try to get back in the habit of giving you some excellent Sunday music. We got out of the habit recently as we had been away on Sundays, but will try to get back on track with it…

Here are a couple of tracks from Ravi Shankar – perhaps one of the greatest sitar players of the last century. For those who don’t know, he’s the guy the Beatles went to see in India in the ’60’s, and when they came back their music was changed for the rest of their time together. John Lennon said he was a musical child, and the music of the Beatles (until then) was “childish” beside someone like Ravi Shankar. George Harrison and Shankar became life-long friends.

There are two pieces here: the first is a more recent piece with Shankar in his older years playing with his daughter (who is also stellar). The second is from the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967.

I saw him last year when he was in Toronto. Absolutely hypnotic. He’s getting older now, so you should see him before he stops touring.

Enjoy.
